Women's expo offers full day of activities

Area women are invited to a day of entertainment, health and financial advice, rich desserts and shopping when a local group holds an Expo Fundraiser Saturday, May 14, at Mystical Rose Gardens, town of Martell.

The event, planned by the Women's Deacon Committee of St. John's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the former Anderson Plant Farm, W5415 890th Ave., Baldwin.

Over 20 vendors will offer items ranging from jewelry to chocolate to accessories to scrapbooking supplies. Desserts will be available for free will offering all day as long as the supply lasts. Our Coffee Barn in Spring Valley will sell coffee.

At 11 a.m. a panel of speakers will address women's heart health issues with an emphasis on physiology, diet and exercise. Panel members include Dr. Kerri Lijewski from the River Falls Medical Clinic; Registered Dietician Deb Sanders from the clinic and River Falls Area Hospital; and Shauna Knott, coordinator of RFAH's Wellness Center.

At 2 p.m. Jennifer O'Neill of O'Neill Elder Law in Hudson will discuss estate planning.

At 3 p.m. Dr. Kathleen Farah, a family physician with special interest in holistic medicine, will offer "Tips and Tools" for women to help manage stress.

At 1 p.m. there will be a fashion show featuring models wearing new spring fashions from three women's specialty clothing stores in downtown Hudson.

Singer/songwriter Susan Brantley will perform songs from her new CD, "He Said Love," at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Her CDs will be available for purchase.

Those attending the expo will also be invited to try Zumba with Michelle Calcagno and other licensed instructors as they hold a demonstration on stage at noon.

Bobbie Jean Kuhn, River Falls, author of "No Longer Afraid," will display, sell and sign her book.

Spring Valley High School sophomores MaKenna Johnson and Riley Bowman, members of their school choir and Spring Valley Stagehands, theater group, will also sing.

Silent auctions will be held for goods and services donated by local individuals and businesses. Bids can be submitted from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. with the winners announced at 3:30 p.m.

Door prizes will be presented hourly. Raffle winners will be announced at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Admission to the expo is $5 and includes an entry ticket for door prizes.

The event will raise funds for the Free Clinic of Pierce and St. Croix Counties and St. John's Social Concern's Fund.

The Free Clinic provides care and preventative education for area people who have no health care alternative. The clinic, which opened in 2007, operates each Tuesday evening at the River Falls Medical Clinic. For more information, visit the website:
