After years as River Falls' Emergency Medical Services director, Jeff Rixmann is stepping into a new role. Rixmann has accepted the position of Community Relations Coordinator, said Assistant City Administrator Julie Bergstrom.

"It's basically what Jeff has been doing, along with the EMS director duties," Bergstrom said. "And with the growth in the organization, it's just too hard to get everything done."

So, Rixmann has stepped into the newly-created position.

"I'm a community minded person," said Rixmann. "This new position allows me to focus more of my time in the community building partnerships and developing additional public health outreach programs and initiatives such as community paramedicine."

As Community Relations Coordinator, Rixmann will oversee special events and public education programs, as well as public access defibrillation programs, assist the training coordinator with training, help with field training and evaluation for new EMTS and paramedics, participate in public relations events related to RF EMS and the community, cover paramedic shifts as directed, and research and recommend new programs to the EMS Director.

"I look forward to working more directly with community members," Rixmann said, "and organizations towards these new initiatives to develop healthier and safer River Falls and Prescott areas."

The city has hired an interim EMS Director, Bergstrom said. Dave Matteson, of Allina Health Emergency Medical Services will serve as interim director temporarily, until the city can hire a new director.

Matteson has been with Allina Health EMS for 24 years, starting as paramedic. He holds a bachelor's degree in public health from St. Cloud State University. He has lead many departments throughout his career. He currently manages 911 response in Ramsey, Anoka and Hennepin counties in the Twin Cities area.

He is also a part-time paramedic in Woodbury, Minnesota and a 1989 graduate of River Falls High School currently working on a Master of Leadership and Management degree from Concordia University.

Bergstrom said Matteson will serve as interim director only until a new EMS director is selected.
