Email News Alerts

A 100th birthday celebration will be held for Margaret Hofacker September 16 at Treasure Island Casino in Red Wing.

Hofacker was born September 12, 1907 in the town of Waterville to Frank and Mary (Birkel) Laschinger on the Weber Hill (above Little Arkansaw Valley) and the Hartung Hill (known as the Laschinger Hill above the Big Arkansaw Valley). She was the fourth of five children, joining Joseph, Clara, Laura and Theresa.

She attended Knight School just below the Hartung Hill in Big Arkansaw Valley from 1913-1921. The traditional way for the five children to get school was walking through fields and woods to get to the Hartung Hill. It was noted that when it got cold and windy, Frank would have to meet them halfway with blankets.

For the last two years she was at Knight School, her seventh and eighth grade teacher was Martha Pittman, who was her first cousin. Pittman actually even lived with Margaret's family the second year.

After Knight School, Margaret attended Arkansaw High School from 1921-1926. She was the first of her siblings to attend Arkansaw because Arkansaw didn't have a high school until 1920.
