ELMWOOD -- Lois Adank couldn’t believe it’s been 41 years she spent with the Elmwood School District.

“Each one goes faster,” she said Thursday. “The kids and staff have made it a good place to work. I liked it here.”

Yet, “it’s time to change,” she states, as Friday marked her final day as middle school/high school secretary.

Adank has called Elmwood home for most of her life. She graduated from Elmwood, has lived in the same house in Elmwood with husband Donald for over 50 years, and prior to her working for the school, spent 10 years working for the village.

Adank served under six superintendents and eight principals during her time in Elmwood, with Donald Schmitz and Chet Lien holding each title the longest.

Schmitz was one of many current and former staff members who stopped by the school Thursday to say congratulations and good luck to Adank as the district threw her a party.

“This was nice,” she said, as cake and coffee were served. “I didn’t expect anything.”

Adank was showered with gifts such as flowers, a jewelry box, a solar globe and a deck of cards (Adank loves to play euchre).

When asked what’s next, Adank said traveling with friends, more time with family -- her and Donald have three sons and five grandchildren -- and more time with Donald in their cabin up north (Donald previously retired from the school district as a bus driver and as a taxidermist).

“When the first day of school comes on (Sept. 3), I know I will miss being here,” she said. “I have made a lot of good friends and memories.”

Nicole Freiermuth was named as her replacement. The Elmwood graduate comes from the River Falls School District, where she worked for over 20 years, including the last six as secretary for Greenwood Elementary.
