On Aug. 1, Allina Health will assume full ownership of Regina Medical Center in Hastings.

For almost 30 years, Regina Medical Center has built a close working relationship with Allina Health, according to a press release issued by Regina.

With two clinics located on its campus and an additional clinic in Prescott, Wis., Regina has become clinically integrated with Allina Health's electronic medical records system and specialty care services. Five years ago, Allina Health became a 25 percent owner of Regina Medical Center and Regina's physicians aligned their practices with Allina Medical Clinic.

This week Regina completed the next step in its journey toward a long-term association with Allina Health.

Allina Health has apparently committed to investing in several enhancements to the Regina campus while expanding primary and emergency care. This will also allow Regina to provide patients additional comprehensive specialty services like oncology, cardiology and neurology.

The partnership comes at a crucial time in health care, according to the press release.

"Most healthcare organizations are working toward achieving the 'triple aim' of providing a better patient experience, improved health for our population, and lower healthcare costs," said Mark Vukelich, Regina's director of marketing. "We are confident our partnership will assist us in accomplishing these goals.

With the same confidence, the Regina Board of Directors has decided to partner with the Benedictine Health System, a Catholic, mission-based, non-profit health system headquartered in Duluth.

Benedictine Health System provides complete long-term care services for aging adults, including independent housing, assisted living, skilled nursing and rehabilitation services in facilities located across six states. Benedictine Health System will acquire full ownership of Regina's Senior Living services from Allina Health in January.

As of Aug. 1, Regina employees will remain employed by Regina Medical Center as a wholly owned subsidiary of Allina Health. Beginning Jan. 1, 2014, any employees who transition to Benedictine Health System will be covered under compensation and benefit plans set by Benedictine Health System.

"This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Regina and the Hastings community," said Vukelich. "We look forward to what the future holds for health care in the Hastings Community."

He stressed that more specifics about the partnership will be available in the next two weeks.

The name will remain the same.
