Menomonie 2, Ellsworth 1

Ellsworth fell in a pitchers' duel in the first game of the Bloomer tournament Saturday.

The Panthers outhit Menomonie by one, but it was the lack of clutch hits that hurt Ellsworth.

"It was a pretty good game, but we had some opportunities where we didn't come up with timely hits," Ellsworth coach Ryan Casper said.

Halle Hatch took the loss for the Panthers. The junior went four innings, gave up six hits and allowed two earned runs.

Morgan Christopherson knocked in the lone run for the Panthers in the second inning.

The Panthers managed to get a couple runners on in the fifth inning, but failed to convert them into runs.

Bloomer 7, Ellsworth 5

Ellsworth had a commanding 4-2 lead on powerhouse Bloomer, which entered the tournament 22-2 overall, until the fifth inning. That's when things fell apart.

Casper took out starter Hatch. After that, two walks, a couple of timely hits and a couple untimely errors allowed Bloomer to score two and three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.

"Bloomer's a pretty tough team," Casper said. "We kind of hit their first pitcher, but then they brought in their No. 1 (Sabra Meinen). She's a pretty solid pitcher."

Allison Freier was a triple away from the cycle and hit her home run in the seventh to pull the Panthers within two. She took the loss in the circle, though, pitching 1 1/3 innings, giving up five runs but only one of them was earned.

Ellsworth fell to 10-5 overall after the pair of losses and is 9-3 in the Middle Border Conference. It plays host to Amery on Monday.
