Asian Carp discovered in Lake Michigan
LAKE CALUMET - Discovery of a 19-pound Asian carp near Lake Michigan confirms the fish have breached an electric barrier on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.
Regional political leaders had been demanding the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shut a navigational lock to keep the fish out of the Great Lakes. They say its voracious appetite could devastate the region's fishing industry. The navigational lock was considered the last line of defense for Lake Michigan. The carp was found at Lake Calumet, about six miles from Lake Michigan.
A commercial fisherman working for the state of Illinois was doing routine sampling in the area. A state spokesman says it's important to know where the fish are as the battle continues to keep them out of the Great Lakes.
