Assembly votes to remove names from state court Web site
A state Assembly committee has voted to remove the names of those not convicted from the state court system's Web site.
The Corrections and Courts panel voted 9-2 Thursday to delete cases where the defendants were found innocent or their charges were dropped.
Robin Vos, R-Racine, proposed the measure, saying employers find it too easy to assume those people are guilty just because their charges are online for all to see.
But the head of the state courts and media groups opposed the bill, saying it opens the possibility of favoritism in deciding who gets deleted and Wisconsinites would no longer get a complete record of what's happening in their courts.
The deleted records could still be viewed at local courthouses.
