Bank burglar pleads guilty to property damage
A Minnesota man pled guilty Friday in Pierce County Circuit Court to burglary-related charges for his involvement in the attempted Hiawatha National Bank (HNB) break-in last May.
Michael K. Schumann, 42, pled guilty to felony criminal damage to property and possession of burglarious tools. He will be sentenced on those charges at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2. As part of the plea agreement, the other two charges, burglary and criminal damage to ATM, were dismissed.
Around 1 a.m. May 13, Pierce County Dispatch received an alarm call from HNB. Sheriff's department personnel arrived on scene, assisted by the Red Wing Police Department.
Upon arrival, they found Schumann and Roger Bugh attempting to steal money from an ATM machine, located outside the bank's building. The pair were then arrested and charged with subsequent crimes.
Bugh pled guilty to burglary and was sentenced to five years prison last month.
