Bay City residents to walk in three-day breast cancer fundraiser
Sixty miles in one direction can take you many places, but Bay City residents Leah Nesbitt-Miller and Deb Anderson-Lexvold have joined thousands of breast cancer supporters in preparing for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure fundraiser Aug. 19-21 in the Twin Cities.
Miller said the pair will walk approximately 600 miles during their training, plus, participating in the half-marathon River City Ramble in Red Wing. "Through our participation in this event we know we are making a personal impact on the breast cancer movement," Miller said. "The Komen 3-Day for the Cure is challenging, but the opportunity to have an impact is enormous."
Miller is walking for friends and family who have had lived with and died from cancer, and specifically she walks for her Aunt Leslie, who was diagnosed with breast cancer.
"I figure if my Aunt Leslie can struggle through her chemotherapy, radiation and pain, well, this is the least I can do," she said. Lexvold is walking for her mom who is a four-year breast cancer survivor, and for her friend Karen Sprout who passed away at the age of 41, leaving behind three young daughters. "Both Deb and I want to be part of finding a cure and we are getting involved to help with the ongoing research," Miller said. She added they have designed a shirt for their walk that will enable them to walk for others.
The Susan G. Komen Twin Cities 3-Day for the Cure starts on Aug. 19 and ends with the closing ceremony Aug. 21. Walkers cover about 20 miles a day, traveling at their own pace. Hundreds of volunteer crew members support the walkers through the three-day journey providing meals, refreshments and snack stops, gear transport, hot showers, portable restrooms, safety on the streets and 24-hour medical services.
