Betty Hanson, 88

Betty Jane Hanson, age 88, of River Falls, Wis., died Saturday, Feb. 18, at her home.

Betty was born on Sept. 10, 1923, in Princeton, Ind., the daughter of Henry and Helen Esther (Harris) Aasterud. She was the salutatorian of the Ellsworth High School graduating class of 1941. Betty then attended River Falls Teachers College, graduating with a bachelor's degree in education. While in college she not only worked the entire time while attending but also served as editor for the Student Voice and was listed in the National Who's Who of College Students, and she also received a Golden R for scholastic achievement. Because of her scholastic achievements and a shortage of teachers, during WWII she was recruited to teach English at Spring Valley (Wis.) High School.

On Aug. 17, 1946, Betty married Charles Edward "Ed" Hanson at old Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Beldenville. Betty farmed alongside Ed, building fence, keeping the books, milking, gardening, and raising five children.

Betty was a member of the River Falls United Methodist Church, serving on many committees. She was active in the UMW and coordinated many funeral luncheons. She served on the foundation board for the new public library, was a member of the hospital auxiliary, a member of the South Fork Ladies Aid, and a member of the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. Betty was a founding member of the South Fork Saddle Club and a 4-H project leader. Betty was the clerk for the town of River Falls.

Betty is survived by her loving husband, Ed Hanson, River Falls; four children, Charles "Charley" Hanson, Peter Hanson, Siri (Greg) Smith, Paul (LeAnn) Hanson, all of River Falls; son-in-law Scott (Becky) Teigen, Glenwood City, Wis.; four grandchildren, Travis (Lori) Teigen, Brian (Laura) Teigen, Cole Hanson, and Shelby Hanson.

Betty was preceded in death by her daughter Kristi Ann Teigen and her sister, Dr. Margaret Williams, Ph.D.

Funeral services for Betty will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the River Falls United Methodist Church, River Falls. Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, River Falls. Visitation 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Cashman-Hill Funeral Home, River Falls, and 1 hour prior at church on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Travis Teigen, Brian Teigen, Cole Hanson, Larry Hanson, Allen Hanson, and Joyce Connolly. Honorary pallbearers will be Lorne Hanson, Jerry Peterson, Fred Glasbrenner, and Gary Glasbrenner.
