Busy days of WIAA spring sports tournament action
Just before the Memorial Day weekend Pierce County prep athletes will be busy in WIAA tournaments and meets.
Thursday features track sectionals across the state. The top four qualify for next weekend's state meet in La Crosse. Ellsworth and Prescott athletes will be in Bloomer for the Division 2 meets while those from Spring Valley, and Elmwood and Plum City will be at the Division 3 meet in Colfax. The D-2 meet starts at 3:45 p.m. while the Colfax meet begins at 3 p.m. Check out links to the heat sheets for both meets to see what events county athletes are competing and where they are seeded. Spring Valley and Elmwood/Plum City will defend the girls' sectional title they shared last year while Prescott will try to make a push for the boys' title.
Also today are regional finals in prep softball. Elmwood made it that far last spring. This year, joined by their allies from Plum City, the EPC co-op squad, ranked No. 10 in the state in Division 4, hopes to take the title away from defending champion Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran, who beat Elmwood in the finals last season 7-1 in Eau Claire. This year's contest will be in Elmwood beginning at 5 p.m.
On Friday the first round of regional tournaments begin for prep baseball in Divisions 2-4. There will be two local contests as Prescott, the No. 3 seed in its regional tournament bracket hosts No. 6 Baldwin-Woodville in Division 2 while Spring Valley, also a No. 3 seed, has No. 6 Plum City coming to Syverson Park in Division 4. First pitch in both games will be at 5 p.m.
