COLBY - Pierce County came away with a pair of sectional champions and several state qualifiers from the WIAA Division 2 Colby Track and Field Sectional Meet Tuesday.

Ellsworth's Alex Campbell took first in the triple jump. On his very last jump of the finals, Campbell leaped 43 feet, three inches. It was his best jump of the year.

"I do well when the pressure is on like it was in my final jump," Campbell said.

Campbell also qualified for state in the high jump after placing fourth.

Prescott's Joe Smith will also go to next weekend's state meet in three events, one of them the 400-meter dash which he won in a season best time of :50.67 seconds.

"We thought he had a time enough to qualify but to win it all was a wonderful surprise," Prescott head coach Bart Appleton said. "But Joe's always stepped up in big meets and this was just another example."

Smith also qualified for the 200-meter dash by placing fourth and may have broke :50 seconds in the 400 in helping PHS' 1600-meter relay team take third and qualify for state as well. Team members along with Smith are Matt Pechacek, Mark Nahorniak, Alex Brunner, Cole Hauenstein and Sam Smith.

PHS's girls will have a relay team at state too. The 3200-meter squad came from as far back as ninth in their heat after the first leg to close the gap and wound up third. Team members are Savannah Bowen, Victoria Simones, Emily Bayer, Autumn Stees, Melanie Tschida and Amanda Stiles.

Simones also qualified in two events herself, placing third in the mile run and fourth in the two-mile.

Ellsworth have a pair of entries in the girls' state meet as well. Lydia Kuhl finished fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles and Abbey Ristow took third in the discus. It's Ristow's second straight state bid in the discus.
