As cancer patient, Hines toasted, will be roasted
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

Since being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer late this spring, Kenny Hines of Ellsworth has undergone a grueling regimen of chemotherapy and radiation.

In that the targeted tumor has shrunk, the treatments seem to be working. But they’ve also left Hines exhausted, his wife, Pam, said Thursday.

So it’s time for a fun break. And that’s the reason his friends and family will raise their glasses during “The Kenny Hines Celebrity Roast,” to be held next Saturday (Sept. 7) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Vino in the Valley in Maiden Rock.

“Our friend Patty Schrantz came up with the idea,” the patient’s spouse said, estimating it’s been worked on since late June. “She got a hold of Larry Brenner (the owner of Vino).”

What they and others have put together is an event to be kicked off by a Bloody Mary bar, with all proceeds to be donated, entertainment, silent, live and Chinese auctions, and an open mic starting at 1 p.m. plus a meal.

“People can roast Kenny at the open mic and tell their stories,” his mate said, agreeing it’s reminiscent of the old “Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts” on TV, made famous by the late singer and entertainer. A poster promoting this version cautions “Some content may be inappropriate for youngsters.”

A lot of donations have materialized for the auctions, she said, topped by an opportunity to hunt with Hines in his deer stand during this coming season’s opener. That’s an item for the live auction and must be bid on.

Other live auction items include: a half-day fishing with TV and newspaper personality Ron Schara for two, a limousine ride and dinner at Vino for four, a trip to Ballard’s Resort—Lake of the Woods for two, a hot air balloon ride, a “Show Wraps” package in which the winner gets to join the Hineses for a behind-the-scenes view of Schara and his dog, “Raven,” shooting the “Minnesota Bound” TV show, meet them and have their picture taken with them, as well as a print from Chad Hines.
