Middle Border Conference football teams played Thursday night this week before the Columbus Day weekend. It's also same night the playoff chances for both Ellsworth and Prescott were ended as both teams lost, the Panthers by a 49-0 score to New Richmond and Prescott by a 27-14 outcome at No. 4 ranked Baldwin-Woodville.
New Richmond led 29-0 at halftime and scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter at Fuller-Symes Field. The Tigers' Shaun Peper carried the ball six times for 101 yards and two touchdowns while the MBC's leading ground gainer Cody Taubman gained 77 yards and a touchdown on six carries.
By contrast, Ellsworth had more interceptions (2) than first downs (1) and were held to just 14 yards rushing on 15 carries. They completed 4-of-8 passes for 29 yards. Travis Kroll led the Panthers in rushing, carrying two times for eight yards. Riley O'Neil was the team's leading receiver. He caught one pass for 16 yards.
Prescott played Baldwin-Woodville tough too, leading 14-13 at halftime. Mark Nahorniak, who led the Cardinals with 113 yards rushing, scored on a one-yard TD run while Mike Lytle recovered a fumble and returned 63 yards for a score.
B-W scored twice in the third quarter to take the lead but PHS was well within striking distance, down only 27-14 in the fourth quarter. But the Cardinals lack of strong passing game hurt its chances of scoring quickly as time ticked away. PHS had drive inside the B-W 30-yard line stall out on downs and had another promising drive snuffed out by an interception. Prescott had just 38 yards passing while B-W's Jordan Weyer had 118 on 7-of-8 attempts and had two TDs. Running back Riley Anderson scored twice and had 163 yards rushing while Jake Keefer caught a TD pass.
Baldwin-Woodville is 5-0 in the MBC while New Richmond is 4-1 as is Somerset while Durand is 3-2. The Hawks' play Somerset next week while Durand will look to nail down a playoff bid next Friday at Prescott. Osceola, at 2-3, is also in playoff contention, but Ellsworth hopes to spoil those hopes along with beat the Chieftains for the first time since 1999. The game is at Osceola Friday.
