Celebrate Mother's Day weekend at Llama Magic & Fiber Friends
LAKE ELMO, Minn. - Visit lamas and rabbits along with their fuzzy alpaca and sheep friends Mother's Day weekend, May 10-11, at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Lake Elmo, Minn. for Llama Magic & Fiber Friends. A free, family oriented fiber festival celebrating its 20th anniversary, the weekend event provides ample opportunity for hands-on experiences with llamas, alpacas, rabbits, sheep—and their wonderful fiber—from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
Vendors from three states will offer fiber lovers everything from raw fleeces, yarn and craft kits to finished garments, home furnishings and even the animals themselves. You're sure to find a gift for Mom among the jewelry, original art, pottery and handmade soap for sale as well. Fiber demonstrations will be given throughout the weekend—spinning, sock knitting machine, needle felting and more—and the public can register for free prizes.
Short educational talks will be followed by a chance for visitors to ask questions. Topics include using llamas as therapy animals, caring for alpacas and their fiber, using llamas with youth in 4-H and FFA projects, having fun with rabbits and their fiber and how to dye different types of fiber. Visitors to Llama Magic & Fiber Friends also will have the chance to vote for their favorite handspun skeins and handmade fiber items, and top vote getters will be awarded prizes. In addition, a major alpaca fleece show will judge and display alpaca fleeces from throughout the region.
Sunday's llama and alpaca show is fun for both spectators and exhibitors. Watch handlers lead their animals through a series of obstacles, and cheer for your favorites as they compete in llama limbo and leaping llama contests. Join in the fun by taking a llama for a walk through a simple obstacle course. Food vendors are on the grounds all weekend, and the setting is fun and relaxing for the whole family.
The Washington County Fairgrounds is located at 12300 N. 40th St. at the intersection of Washington County Rd. 15 and U.S. Hwy. 5, just east of Lake Elmo. The fiber festival is held on the north end of the fairgrounds.
