Census Bureau gears up for another head count

By Bill Kirk

It's a big job, but somebody's got to do it.

A head count of the nation will be taken in the coming year and the U.S. Census Bureau has mobilized for the effort. Preparations for U.S. Census 2010 have filtered down to Pierce County, with census takers being recruited for here and training sessions now being held.

"Between 20 and 25 people are needed for the county," Recruiting Assistant Paul Nielsen said.

The job requires 20-to-40 hours a week on an individual's own schedule, starting in late February and ending in late May, Nielsen said. Enumerators (as the census takers are called) must be at least 18-years-old, be a U.S. citizen, have a vehicle and have a valid driver's license. The pay is $11.75 per hour and 55 cents per mile; the work involves going door-to-door with a 10-question survey.

"A lot of the surveys are mailed out, but they're not delivered to post office boxes," he explained about the need for the personal contacts. Verification of addresses in the county has already begun, he added.

Inclusion in the census is important for everyone because it determines legislative representation, government funding for roads and bridges, parks and other public services, the assistant said. The census is taken once every 10 years. People interested in applying for census jobs are encouraged to call 1-866-861-2010 or visit www.2010censusjobs.gov.
