Ribbons of fire wound their way north in a large field at a controlled burn Wednesday evening.

The site was on acreage owned by Larry and Diane Hurtgen, north of 770th Avenue and west of 290th Street in the town of Gilman.

The orange glow and smoke plume could be seen for 10 miles or more, prompting numerous calls to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

Spring Valley firefighters had pre-planned the fire were on hand with a brush truck, water and personnel to help keep things under control.

Chief Terry Shafer said the weather and conditions for the fire were ideal and it "went real good".

Fire crews cleared the scene about 10:20 p.m.

Traffic from curious onlookers grew heavy enough that deputies arrived and used their lights and klaxon horns to keep traffic moving.

Wisconsin DNR spokesman Ed Culhane at Eau Claire issued a release Wednesday advising that fire danger remains very high throughout the region. "With turkey hunters going afield, we are hoping to remind as many folks as possible to be extra careful," he said.
