Couple engaged on Ferris wheel

Eric Hofmann and his fiancée, Lindsey Shafer, with “Abigail” at the spring heifer show Friday during the Pierce County Fair. Hofmann proposed marriage to Shafer while both were on the Ferris wheel Thursday and she said “yes.”

The euphoria a young couple often feels after he proposes marriage to her and she says “yes” is often compared to a “high.”

Eric Hofmann and Lindsey Shafer had more reason than that to experience such a feeling at the Pierce County Fair Thursday. Hofmann’s proposal came while they rode the Ferris wheel and she maintained the presence of mind to snap a photo of the special moment when he slipped a ring on her finger.

“I knew the fair was important to her,” Hofmann said Friday about his choice of the venue for the proposal in advance. Indeed, as he was telling this, Shafer was showing her animal, “Abigail,” in the fair’s spring heifer show.

Yet, other than calling a brother to share the plan (and getting a ring), it was the extent of advance preparations, the groom-to-be said. Then, the now-engaged pair was watching a nephew in the pony pull Thursday and she made a suggestion he immediately sensed would create the right time.

“She told me, ‘We should go on the Ferris wheel’,” he said.

Hofmann of Chicago said he met Shafer when he was in his first year of coaching hockey and she was working as a waitress in a restaurant in Rochester, Minn. He now coaches a high school team; she’s presently employed at a clinic.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Shafer of Elmwood has been coming to the local fair since she was three-years-old. She has been a member of the Olivet Otters 4-H Club.

The couple foresees a wedding date sometime in September of next year.
