Cudd doesn't stop until he gets semifinal victory
MADISON - After giving up a takedown in the third period of his semifinal match at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, River Falls wrestler Logan Cudd made sure to tell himself there was only one way he could wrestle to win the 125-pound, Division 1 match and get to the finals.
"I said to myself this is my senior year and I'm not going to stop until I've won," Cudd said.
Eventually Cudd stopped but not after winning a dramatic 8-6 decision over Muskego's Justin Scherkenback Friday at the Kohl Center.
Cudd scored a three-point nearfall in the second period and seemed in control in the third with the score 5-2. But a mistake allowed Scherkenback to get a reversal. He allowed Cudd to escape but took him down again to tie the score at 6-6 to send the match to an extra session.
"I wasn't so much tired, I was just sloppy and not focused," Cudd said. "I needed to get that back and that's what I did in the overtime. I went right for it again and got the takedown."
Cudd will wrestle Hartland Arrowhead's Adam Yde (39-8) in Saturday evening's finals, which begin at 6 p.m.
River Falls' other two state qualifiers, Adam Figi at 160 and Tyson Bystrom at 189 both were eliminated from the tournament in the consolation rounds Friday afternoon.
Figi beat Eric Vls of West Allis Central 4-2 and Bystrom beat Jake Kettenhofen of Appleton North 6-4 but in the next round of consolation matches to determine who gets to be on the awards stand, Figi was beaten by Jake Stilling of Elkhorn 5-3 and Bystrom fell to Jake Reuteler of the New Berlin co-op 10-4.
