D-1 wrestlers eliminated in consolation round
MADISON - Area wrestlers from River Falls and New Richmond were eliminated in the consolation rounds at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament Friday.
All three wrestlers won their first matches during the morning. New Richmond's Shane Blackman beat Austin Quartullo of Muskego 5-4 at 103 pounds. River Falls' Adam Figi beat Eric Vls of West Allis Central 4-2 at 160 and River Falls' Tysom Bystrom beat Jake Kettenhofen of Appleton North 6-4 at 189.
But in the next round of consolation matches to determine who gets to be on the awards stand, all three wrestlers lost. Blackman lost to Bobby Nachreiner of Hartford by a 13-4 major decision. Figi was beaten by Jake Stilling of Elkhorn 5-3 and Bystrom fell to Jake Reuteler of the New Berlin co-op 10-4.
Three area wrestlers are still alive in D-1 and all are competing in the semifinals tonight. They are River Falls' Logan Cudd at 125, Hudson's Nick Larson at 152 and New Richmond's Joel Neumann at 285. The semis begin at 7 p.m.
