DARE vehicle wins first place at conference
The Pierce County Sheriff’s D.A.R.E. vehicle has been a big hit locally since it debuted in 2011.
It turns out national and international people are fans as well.
For the second time in three years, the vehicle won first place at the International D.A.R.E. Conference, which was held in Cincinnati last month. The vehicle won in the Class III Active Police Vehicle/SUV/Truck Division.
“The first time I was surprised because I never went through it before,” said D.A.R.E. officer Steve Albarado, referring to 2011’s first place in Nashville.
This year’s conference, Albarado was singing a different tune.
“You know what they say about location in real estate,” he explained. “Well, the vehicle was placed in a great location in the conference center. It was garnering a lot of attention and photos.
“I liked our chances.”
He said while D.A.R.E. officers solely made up the judging in 2011, this year’s panel included families of officers as well.
“They loved the colors, especially the purples and greens,” Albarado said, when asked what were some of the judge’s responses. “They also loved the vehicle was used in active patrol.”
