Decision on five-day Ellsworth school 4YK program delayed

A decision on changing the four-year-old kindergarten program from a four-day to a five-day schedule was delayed until later this month by the Ellsworth School Board Monday.

In tabling the matter, board members said they wanted time to gather more information. At Superintendent Barry Cain's recommendation, they'll address the 4YK schedule again during a special public meeting on budget adjustments, which was later set for Monday, March 29, at 6 p.m. in the high school library.

Monday's board discussion on the 4YK topic began with a report on the results of a survey the district sent to parents of students in the program. Prairie View Elementary School Principal Mary Zimmerman said approximately 150 mailings about schedule preferences went out, including to the parents of all 112 participating students at the Lindgren Early Learning Center.

As of Thursday, the survey showed 32 respondents preferred a five-day schedule, 32 others preferred a four-day schedule and 18 had no preference. Zimmerman said nine more surveys were returned between Thursday and the time of the board meeting, with five favoring a four-day schedule and four favoring a five-day schedule.
