Congratulations to Spring Valley's Riley Bowman. Pierce County wrestling fans will notice her when she sings the national anthem just before the finals of the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament Saturday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Kohl Center if they haven't already. She's also sang the anthem before the finals of the Northern Badgers and before a Timberwolves game and before the Birkie race as well.

Boyceville heavyweight wrestler Matt Wyss is back in the Bulldogs' line-up after being out for much of the season due to eligibility issues. His first meet back he won the BRC/D-SC Jamboree title last weekend. His return is why I like Boyceville to win what's going to be a very tough regional up in Clear Lake Saturday. It's worth the trip up there even for the casual fan to watch not just wrestling but emotional wrestling as well.

Congrats too to Ellsworth and Pierce County's own Justin Hoyer for winning the gold medal at the recent Winter X Games. A pioneer in the sport of snowmobile freestyle, Hoyer finally gets his due.

Speaking of gold medals, bring on Winter Olympic hockey! There's no better event. And if you need to get psyched up about it, either watch the movie Miracle or see replays of the U.S's 4-3 win over the Soviet Union back in 1980 on You Tube.

Durand High School girls' basketball player Sami Schroeder went over the 1,000-point mark in the Panthers' win over River Falls earlier this week.

Best wishes and get well soon to Spring Valley head boys' basketball coach Rob Bosshart. He's had health problems that have kept him off the sidelines. The Cardinals are still confident they've played through their problems to still make some noise this season, and with their win over a good Colfax squad, they might be right although their lack of size has hurt them against some of their opponents.

And to think there were actually people who thought the Badger men's basketball team might better off without Jon Leuer getting back into the line-up because it might disrupt their "flow". The only flow they had was making three-point shots and when you don't "make shots", especially against team much taller than you like Illinois was, then you can see why Leuer presence was sorely missed. Get well soon to you too!

It's been obvious since the start of the NBA season that both the Bucks and the Timberwolves have been buildling towards the future. Now of course a cynic would say (and for good reason)that future could well be in the distant horizon far, far away. But both teams have shown, before the all-star break, the building process has progressed slowly but surely. The Bucks are only a game out of the playoff picture in the NBA East despite not having Michael Redd, lost again due to injury. The T-Wolves have played well too and if they win 20 or more games this season then head coach Kurt Rambis did pretty well to get as much as he could out his team in his first year.

St. Paul's Cretin Derham-Hall mountain-like lineman Seantrel Henderson may very well have been the top high school football prospect in the nation. But the University of Wisconsin signed a lineman from West De Pere by the name of Riki Kodanko who is just as big as Henderson as a walk on. Keep an eye on both players and see how they develop for their respective schools (assuming Henderson signs with USC as planned) over the next four-to-five years. Then you can judge for yourself how accurate the so-called recruiting rankings are and star system is when it comes to judging high school talent. Sometimes it comes down to who you play for and where you play at and who is recruiting you that factors into these rankings more so than how good you really are or whether you've got talent enough to develop into a great player.
