DNR officials scale back tougher rules for fishing tournaments
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources fish managers have scaled back tougher rules for fishing tournaments.

In January, the Natural Resources Board voted to limit the number of tournaments for each body of water. In addition, they required permits costing up to $200 starting next year.

But fishing groups took issue with the permit fees and measures that would let wardens search live wells.

Those groups howled to their legislators, and those lawmakers got the DNR Board to hold things up.

In response, the fishing managers proposed a reduction in permit fees for some tournaments. And they removed provisions about the wardens' authority.

The board is expected to act on the newest proposals Aug. 13.
