Doumit double wins it for Twins
MINNEAPOLIS -- Ryan Doumit delivered a go-ahead two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning to help the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox, 7-5, in the opener of a three-game set at Target Field.
After Clete Thomas drew a walk and Joe Mauer singled, Doumit doubled to center off Ramon Troncoso (0-2) to bring in the winning run.
Mauer finished 3-for-5 with a home run, double and two RBI while Trevor Plouffe contributed two runs driven in as well. Jared Burton (1-4) allowed Chicago to tie the game in the eighth but picked up the win. Glen Perkins earned his 17th save of the season facing the minimum in the ninth. Twins starter Mike Pelfrey surrendered four runs on 10 hits over six-plus frames. He is winless in his last eight outings.
A bus carrying a minor league team in the Minnesota Twins organization was involved in a fatal crash in Florida early Tuesday morning. Police say a car traveling the wrong way on a Jacksonville, Florida interstate plowed into the charter bus carrying the Fort Myers Miracle, the Twins Class A affiliate. The driver of the car was killed, but nobody on the bus was injured. The team resumed its trip to Tennessee.
