Eagle numbers up around lower Wisconsin River
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

PRAIRIE DU SAC - More than twice as many bald eagles as a year ago are hanging around the lower Wisconsin River.

The DNR conducted an aerial survey last week and counted 434 adult and baby eagles between the Mississippi River and the Petenwell Flowage. That's up from 186 birds about the same time a year ago.

DNR biologist Dan Golz says the bald eagles are hunting for fish, and they're most commonly seen from Prairie du Sac dam westward to Highway 14. Golz says the numbers of eagles vary greatly each winter, depending on the ice conditions.
