East Ellsworth Post Office to close this month

Email News Alerts

Generations of east end residents have been served by the East Ellsworth Community Post Office, the management of which was passed down from one generation to another earlier this year.

Actually, the passage skipped a generation during that most recent transfer. But later this month, the operation will come to a complete stop.

Present Postmaster Angela Becker confirmed last week the office will close on Friday, Aug. 21. Becker said she took over the contract station in the southern part of the east end business district early this spring after her grandmother, Myrna Olson, became ill and didn't want to continue as postmaster. Olson then gave the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) a 60-day notice she wasn't going to renew her contract for the station and the USPS decided on the closing.

"It wasn't profiting enough," Becker said of the reason, "with less people using post offices."

Today, the public can buy stamps online on computers and print them out themselves, for example, she explained.

Her grandma, who's currently living with her uncle in Shakopee, Minn., hopes to sell the building, which has a rental unit in the back, she said. After Aug. 21, all mail will be handled by the main post office in the village's west end. The zip code 54010, assigned to the east end station, will disappear, but mail addressed with that number will still be delivered.
