EHS tennis teams ends season at sub-sectionals
ALTOONA - The Ellsworth High School boys's tennis team was unable to advance anyone from the sub-sectional to the sectional meet last week nor score a point in sectionals either.
All the Panther players were eliminated in the sub-sectional meet which took place May 20 in Altoona.
No. 1 singles player Will Huppert came within a set of making it to sectionals. He lost the first set to Amery's Josh Stewart 4-6 and was down 2-5 in the second set when he rallied to win 7-5. He was ahead in the third set 3-2 before a rain delay broke his momentum. When play resumed Stewart took control of the match again and won 6-4.
"Will was the most consistent that he's been," EHS head coach Mary Rumple said. "He ran down points that were all over the court and he put the ball in difficult places to retrieve. It was a great match where no one really lost. They both can be proud of the way they left everything on the court. Every coach in our conference has told me throughout the year how they've appreciated Will's attitude on and off the court."
EHS did have one win on the day. The No. 1 doubles team of Adrian Schott and James Jean won their first match against Philips 6-3, 6-2 but lost their next match 1-6, 1-6 to Altoona's Brady Kaiser and Alex Weber.
Ellsworth's No. 2 singles players lost a hard-fought match to Ashland's unbeaten Felipe Olivera in straight sets. Olivera won the sectional title at No. 2 and will head to state.
"Mike played very hard AND well, but lost. He can truly hold his head high on his last match of his career." Rumple said.
EHS's Jason Grubish lost at No. 3 singles 1-6, 1-6 to Altoona's Ben Thereyl. Ellsworth's No. 3 doubles team of Tate Stewart and Eliot Balzer lost their first match vs a Phillips duo 4-6 2-6. Ellsworth's No. 2 doubles team of Caleb Gustafson and Zac Manor lost the prelim round in three sets via tie-breaker to Durand 6-3, 1-6, (10-12).
