EHS' version of 'Taming of Shrew' opens Thursday
The students of Ellsworth High School will present the classic Shakespearean comedy "The Taming of the Shrew" this Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Ellsworth High School. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for students.
The very modern adaptation of the play is set in Ellsworth and the surrounding community, with references to Ellsworth locales and language throughout. The play, which tells the story of two sisters, one of whom never wants to get married and finds herself accidentally falling in love, is one of William Shakespeare's most famous comedies and was the basis for the film "10 Things I Hate About You," starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles.
The production stars senior Becca Thorson as Kat, the shrew who stands up for herself, and senior Cordero Roman as Petruchio, the man who eventually tames her after the ultimate battle of wits with the aid of his trusty servant Grumio, played by senior Gabe Pollak. Senior Brittney Boe plays Bianca, Kat's younger sister, and senior Andrew Schneider-Adams plays the very stressed father of the two girls.
Seniors Alex Andrews and Riley Johnson and sophomore Jordan Bloomstrand all play men battling to win the love of Bianca, while senior Bailey Marhoun tackles the challenging role of Trania, a servant to Lucentio (Johnson) who will do anything to help her boss win the woman he loves.
Finally, German exchange student Phillipp Holmer happens onto the scene as the wisest man in all of El Paso, Lucentio's father, Dumermuth.
The rest of the cast is rounded out with seniors Tyler Anderson, Ashley Lind and Justin Lewis; juniors Irene Ford, Tasha Stalker and Jeff Stress, sophomores Kendra Holdorf and Ian Berg, and freshman Kirsten Fuchs.
The play is directed by Ms. Shelly Moore, with stage management by junior Allison Seibel and assistant stage manager William Pederson.
The ridiculous comedy promises antics, a musical number and foolish moments for the whole family, and leaves the audience with the question of whether Kat was tamed, or Kat and Petruchio found true love.
