Ellsworth boys golf team qualifies for state meet
CUMBERLAND - A lackluster front nine effort was more than made up by a spectacular showing on the back nine by the Ellsworth High School boys' golf team at the WIAA Division 2 Cumberland Sectional today.
And that back-nine effort on the Cumberland Golf Course pushed the Panthers past Hayward by a single-stroke to qualify them for the state golf meet next week in Madison for the first time since 2000.
Osceola won the sectional title with a score of 315 and Ellsworth was second with a combined score of 338, beating out Hayward's 339. The Hurricanes came into Tuesday's sectional meet with the top score from regional competition at 315 and had made the state meet field last year along with Osceola.
EHS's individual scores were Emery Whalen 82, Bryce Stein 83, Mike Tingelhoff 84, Chrystian Kulow 89 and Kyle Kurrelmeyer 91. Their scores for holes 10-18 were 40, 41, 41, 42 and 47 respectively.
EHS was also helped by Hayward having to count two scores in the 90s in their totals.
Osceola's Dan Cronick was the meet medalist, finishing with a two over par 74. Altoona's Gabby Curtis shot a 76 and Hayward's Jordan Duffy had a 78. Both will head to state as individual qualifiers along with Hayward's Michael McDonald, who shot an 80 and won a playoff for the final individual qualifying spot.
The state meet is next Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
