The Ellsworth High School girls' basketball team is still in search of its first win this season. EHS could not hold onto a halftime lead and lost 48-38 to St. Croix Central Friday evening at EHS.
The Panthers led Central 18-16 at halftime and had an 21-16 lead early in the third quarter. But St. Croix Central outscored the home team 24-7 to take a 12-point lead, 40-28 early in the fourth quarter. SCC won the third quarter by a 23-10 margin. They made three three-pointers and also made 7-of-14 free throws in the quarter alone. They were able to get to the foul line often and badly outrebounded Ellsworth as well. The Panthers put on a press despite their foul trouble, and was able to cut Central's lead to five at 42-37, but could not get any closer despite several opportunities to do so.
Kelsey Betthauser led EHS with 13 points and teammate Tacia Kuhl scored 10 points. SCC was led by McKenzy Johnson's 14 points. Ellsworth is at Prescott Tuesday.
