Ellsworth golfers finish fourth, get through regionals
SOMERSET - The Ellsworth High School golf team will advance to the sectional meet for the second straight season as they finished fourth in the WIAA Division 2 Somerset Regional Wednesday afternoon.
The Panthers shot a combined score of 348, two strokes ahead of fifth place Amery. Osceola won the regional title with a score of 330 followed by Altoona 344 and Somerset 346. The top four teams qualify for the sectional meet, which will be next Tuesday in Cumberland.
The Panthers' best score came from Bryce Stein, an 85. That tied him for sixth place individually. Three other EHS golfers shot in the 80s: Chrystian Kulow and Kyle Kurrelmeyer both shot 87s which tied them for 13th place and Mike Tingelhoff shot an 89. Emery Whalen finished with a score of 94.
Altoona's Gabby Curtis won meet medalist honors by shooting a 72. Osceola's Sam Wolfe was second with a 77 and Amery's Thomas Christensen shot a 79 to finish third. He will qualify for the sectional meet as a top four golfer not on a qualifying team. Also going are Amery's Collin Matthews, 85; Bloomer's Noah Price, 86 and Durand's Ben Weber, 89.
Prescott finished seventh in the 11-team field with a score of 389. St. Croix Central was sixth with a score of 383 then the Cardinals followed by Baldwin-Woodville 417, St. Croix Falls 451 and Durand, Incomplete.
PHS's regional meet scores were Tate Nahorniak 92, Joe Haas 94, Brendan Fraser 99, Alex Stuhl 104 and Bailey Benck 111.
This was the third straight meet Ellsworth and Prescott played at Bristol Ridge Golf Course in Somerset.
