Carson Huppert is confident the Ellsworth High School boys' golf team still hasn't played their best golf yet.
The first-year head coach of the Panthers has seen such play in practice, but not in a meet.
"We've had great practice rounds where we've had our players shoot in the mid-70s," Huppert said. "But we're still waiting for it in a meet setting."
If that moment comes in the 89th WIAA State High school Boys' Golf Meet this Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, it will lift underdog EHS to the top of the leaderboard.
Ellsworth comes into the meet, its first since 2000, with the highest score from sectionals at 338, one stroke ahead of Manitowoc Roncalli's 337. The lowest sectional score was put in by River Valley which was a 300. Defending Division 2 state champion Waukesha Catholic Memorial shot a 305 to win its sectional and traditional power Madison Edgewood shot a 306 just to finish runner-up to River Valley. The highest sectional championship score was put by Marinette at 319. Osceola, which won Ellsworth's sectional at Cumberland, shot a 315. Also competing in the state meet is Sheboygan Falls.
The meet is a two-day, full 18 hole competition. EHS will tee off at 12:27 p.m. on Monday and just after 7 a.m. on Tuesday.
One factor in Ellsworth favor is the last time any EHS team played at University Ridge they won the state championship.
