Ellsworth, Prescott to have home games in Level 1 of playoffs

Both Ellsworth and Prescott high schools will have home games next weekend in Level 1 of the WIAA Football Playoffs. Spring Valley, however, will be on the road.

No. 3 ranked Ellsworth (9-0, 7-0) is the top seed in its Division 4 regional quadrant. The Panthers will host the Panthers of St. Croix Central (3-6, 3-3) Friday at 7 p.m. at Fuller-Symes Field.  

Prescott is in the same regional quadrant as Ellsworth in D-4, but the Cardinals (6-3, 4-3) are seeded No. 4 and picked up a home game vs. Spooner (6-3, 5-2) which is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. at Laney Field.

If Ellsworth wins they will take on the winner of the Black River Falls-Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau contest in Level 2. G-E-T (5-4, 4-2) is the No. 4 seed in the quadrant as they finished ahead of the Tigers (5-4, 3-3) in the Coulee Conference. If Prescott wins they'll face either No. 4 Somerset (8-1, 6-1) or Northland Pines. The Spartans are the No. 2 seed and beat the Cardinals 30-0 when the two teams met earlier in the season. Eagle River-based Northland Pines (6-3, 4-2) plays in a conference of teams from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In two games against Wisconsin schools the Eagles beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood 50-22 in their season opener but lost 38-26 to No. 6 ranked Hurley.

Speaking of Hurley, the 8-1 Midgets are the No. 2 seed in in their Division 6 quadrant and will open at home vs. seventh seeded Spring Valley Friday at 7 p.m. at Memorial Field in Hurley. Like Northern Pines, Hurley plays in a league of UP teams where they took second to Forest Park, Mich. Their only loss was to Forest Park by a 31-14 score.  Hurley not only beat Northland Pines but two other Wisconsin teams: Boscobel 47-0 and Washburn/Bayfield/South Shore 49-6. Spring Valley has played a couple of ranked teams already in Mondovi and Glenwood City, both were close losses along with a 19-14 defeat to Colfax on a last second toudchdown.

The winner of the Hurley-Spring Valley game will play either Eau Claire Regis (5-4, 4-3) or the No. 3 seed, Athens (8-1, 8-1), who is ranked No. 7 in Division 6 and were co-champs of the Cloverwood Conference. The top seed in the quadrant is No.3 ranked Edgar (8-1, 7-1) the tri-champs of the Marawood Conference. They'll face Colfax (3-3, 5-3) in their Level 1 contest. Rosholt at No. 4 seed Webster is other tournament pairing in this quadrant. No. 9 ranked Webster (8-1, 5-1) won the Lakeland North title while Rosholt (7-2, 5-0) won the Central Wisconsin Conference - Small Division.
