Ellsworth referendum property purchase approved

A purchase agreement for property was approved by the Ellsworth School Board in a closed session Monday.

The property would be used by the local school district for transportation and maintenance purposes if a facilities referendum passes in a vote set for Tuesday, Feb. 18, Superintendent Barry Cain said yesterday. Indeed, the purchase is contingent upon district voters passing that referendum, Cain said.

The former Astleford International west of Ellsworth at W7735 520th Ave. is the parcel specified in the agreement, he said. It consists of two lots for a total of approximately 11 acres. It’s located near Pierce Pepin Cooperative Services headquarters.

Four sites had been under consideration for relocating the present school bus garage away from the school campus in the village, which the facilities referendum proposes. The Astleford site was the only one of the four with an existing building on it. That structure has been thought to be somewhat suitable for the district’s needs.

The superintendent said earlier $1.3 million of the total facilities amount in this referendum has been budgeted for the transportation and maintenance aspect.
