Ellsworth, Spring Valley play in prep baseball sectionals
Ellsworth and Spring Valley's prep baseball teams will take part in WIAA baseball sectional tournaments today, weather permitting.
No. 6 ranked Ellsworth (14-3 overall) will face the host school of the Division 2 sectional, Viroqua (16-7 overall) at 2 p.m. this afternoon. Both teams were No. 1 seed in their respective regional tournaments. The Blackhawks, Coulee Conference co-champs with Arcadia. The other half of the bracket has Barron (13-5 overall), a No. 2 seed against No. 3 seed Rice Lake (5-7 overall) The Warriors upset top seeded and Heart O'North champion Hayward in the regional final 4-2 while Barron topped Osceola in their final 9-4.
The Division 4 sectional will be played in Shell Lake and Spring Valley (9-6 overall)will face it's second straight ranked team in No. 6 Greenwood. The Indians (12-3 overall) were runners-up to Neillsville in the Cloverbelt East. Spring Valley upended No. 8 Alma/Pepin in the regional championship game in Pepin to advance to its first sectional tournament since 2010. The Cardinals have won four straight. The other half of the bracket had Prarie Farm (9-2 overall) the Lakeland East champs and No. 1 seed taking on Washburn (8-9 overall)a No. 4 seed which topped the No. 1 (Drummond) and No. 2 (Solon Springs) seeds in its regional bracket to advance.
Both the semifinals and final will be played on the same day with the state tournament next week in Appleton at Fox Cities Stadium.
