Ellsworth teacher and coach is pleased with career path he chose

Email News Alerts

Craig Olson was the first in his family to go to college.

At the time, Olson wasn't focused on the career in education he would eventually pursue. He said last week he'd decided on a major in biology by the time he got to college, based on a high school class effort.

"I looked up to my 10th grade biology teacher," he said of a Mr. Gunderson. "They were reclaiming Lake Winona, so we went out and did a hands-on project," he added about the one-half-to-three-quarters-mile long lake created by a back channel to the Mississippi in his Minnesota hometown.

Meantime, Olson had coached his brother's youth hockey team, he said, remembering a Coach Urness influenced him when he played offensive and defensive line in junior varsity football. He ultimately concluded if he could coach, he could teach. Fortunately, many of his classes transferred and now, 32 years later at retirement time, he has few regrets.
