Ellsworth vs. Prescott - Round 3 decides regional title (SV upsets Elmwood, plays for title)
Ellsworth and Prescott prep baseball teams will meet for the third and final time this season, a rubber match which will decide not only the season series but the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament final as well.
The game will take place today at 5 p.m. at Brown Field in Hager City weather permitting. Both teams split in the regular season with Ellsworth winning 2-1 in Hager City and Prescott winning at home 1-0 a few weeks ago.
The No. 6 ranked Panthers, 12-3 overall, advanced with yesterday's 8-5 regional semifinals win over Black River Falls. Isaac Hines was the winning pitcher as the Panthers jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings and held it despite the Tigers efforts' to chip away for the rest of the ballgame.
Meanwhile Prescott, 10-5 overall, displayed their formidable pitching and defensive prowess against a ranked a opponent as they upset No. 8 Altoona 1-0 yesterday in Altoona. Winning pitcher Brady Schommer scattered five hits while PHS got two hits each from Schommer and Austin Tulip plus an RBI from Alex Helmer.
Another Cardinal team playing in a regional final is Spring Valley, 8-6 overall. SV upset No. 2 seeded Elmwood 6-4 at Elmwood yesterday thanks to Troy Rudesill's strong effort from the mound plaus a pair of RBI-doubles from Rudesill and Remington Schneider in a five-run third inning for Valley. The Raiders finish the season 9-4 overall.
Spring Valley will play at No. 8 Alma/Pepin today at 5 p.m. for the Division 4 regional title.
