Ellsworth woman charged with 29 felonies
An Ellsworth woman was charged Thursday in Pierce County Circuit Court with 29 felonies, including 28 counts of theft and one count of fraudulent writings.
Susan M. Sterny, 49, 130 Humble Ave., is scheduled to make her first court appearance 10 a.m., Dec. 16. She is accused of stealing more than $170,000 from Ellsworth Ford from July 2011 through February 2013.
If Sterny is found guilty of all the charges, the maximum combined penalty of all the felonies is over 150 years prison.
How it was found out
According to the criminal complaint:
Ellsworth Ford owners went to Ellsworth police in June after they discovered in March a check written from the business’ checking account with Sterny’s name on the top to a credit union. Upon inquiring, they found out the check, written for $3,917.33, went to Sterny’s credit card account.
The owners explained to police Sterny was Ellsworth Ford’s office manager where she would enter car deals on the computer, enter service charges, prepare financial statements, and at one point write checks. Sterny has worked for them, since the mid-1990’s, the owners said when they owned Baldwin Ford as well.
The owners met with Sterny soon after their discovery and asked how much was taken. They said Sterny told her it was a large amount, but not sure exactly. Also, at the end of March, the owners were notified by one of the financial institutions Sterny used and they thought it was odd to seeing an individual’s car being paid by a business check.
They soon discovered the time frame from 2011 through this year and how much was stolen.
