Ellsworth wrestlers dominate home regional meet

Ellsworth wrestlers dominate home regional meet

It was a day of dominance for the Ellsworth High School wrestling team.

The No. 1 ranked Panthers scored a state-high 348.5 points and for the first time qualified all 14 wrestlers to sectionals at Saturday's WIAA Division 2 Ellsworth regional meet.

And not only did Ellsworth qualify 14 wrestlers, but 13 of them won regional championships starting with Andrew Swanson at 106, Gabe Mancino at 113, Anders Lantz at 120, Jens Lantz at 126; Brad Cain at 132, Tristan Muller 138, Josh Hines at 152, Gabe Frandsen at 160, Logan Kemmerer 170, Dennis Schutz at 182, Brock Steldt at 195, Ken Stowe at 220 and Brodey Kemmerer at heavyweight. Jacob Fuchs placed second at 145 after losing a close 4-3 decision in the finals at to St. Croix Central's Ryan Gulich.

EHS's win puts them into the team sectional meet Tuesday, which is also at Ellsworth. The Panthers will take on Rice Lake in one semifinal and No. 5 Amery will take on fellow regional champ, the Stanley-Boyd/Owen-Withee/Thorp co-op. The meet begins at 6 p.m.

In the team standings after EHS were SCC 165, Prescott 153, Baldwin-Woodville and Bloomer/Colfax both 88 points and Cornell/Gilman/Lake Holcombe 78.5.

Prescott qualified five wrestlers for the individual sectional next Saturday in Amery. Sam Hoopingarner took second at 106 pounds as did Alex Stuhl at 132, Bailey Langer at 138, Troy Urman at 152 and Tyler Miller at 170. Only the top two placewinners go on to sectionals.
