Ellsworth wrestlers move on to quarterfinals

MADISON - Ellsworth High School wrestlers Levi Kuesel and Tanner Eggenberger were successful in their first round bouts Thursday at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament in the Kohl Center.

Other than a late reversal, Kuesel was in control of his Division 2, 152-pound match against Luxemburg-Casco's Matt Zellner. Kuesel broke out to an 8-1 advantage after a pair of nearfalls in the second period and won 12-3.

Eggenberger had a tougher match at 160 against Clinton's Dane Brandle. Eggenberger gave up an escape to start the third period and led only 5-3. But he held off Brandle's takedown attempts in the third period to win.

Kuesel will face Marshall's Thurston Schuster in Friday morning's quarterfinal match while Eggenberger will take on Luxemburg-Casco's Zeke Peters.

Five other EHS wrestlers will be action as well after getting byes on the first day of competition. Jens Lantz faces Sheboygan Falls' Alex Fitzgerald. Roarke Langer takes on Freedom's Devin Bera at 125. D.J. Yarwood takes on Mosinee's Jordan Roosa at 140. Parker Hines' first match at 189 is against Valders' Austin Shillcox and Zac Reister is facing Brandon Clapper of Plainfield Tr-County/Almond-Bancroft.
