Ellsworth wrestlers win state title, SVE takes second
MADISON - The Ellsworth HIgh School wrestling team won its sixth WIAA Division 2 State Team Wrestling Tournament title Saturday afternoon. The No. 1 ranked Panthers defeated No. 6 Pewaukee 41-12 at the University of Wisconsin Field House.
Pierce County's other No. 1 ranked team, Spring Valley/Elmwood, however, came up short against No. 2 Coleman. The Cougars won their eighth state title b y 39-22 score.
EHS led from start to finish using Brad Cain's overtime time at 132 to kick-off the dual meet, using state champs Gabe Frandsen and Dennis Schutz along with team captain and state runner-up Logan Kemmerer to build up a big lead and clinch ed the title with a pin by Gabe Mancino at 120.
Ellsworth's capped off the meet by getting a pinfall from four-time state champion Jens Lantz in his final high school match. The Purple finished with a 20-3 record overall while Pewaukee concluded at 21-6.
The Redbirds too, got off to a good start with a big win by Logan Newton at 132. A win by Zach Newton had the score tied at 6-6. However, the Cougars, 13-4 overall, won six of the next seven matches, three of them by pinfall in the middle and upper weights to take a 33-10 advantage. Andrew Webb notched a pin at 106 and Cruze Hurlburt also pinned his man for SVE at 120 but it was too late. Coleman clinched the title with a win at 113.
The loss was SVE's first this season. They finished the year at 16-1 overall.
