Elmwood School Board hears maintenance projects
ELMWOOD--The Elmwood School Board heard an update of building maintenance projects recently.
Maintenance Supervisor Dave Smith said these projects need to be done in the near future: remove remaining asbestos and replace flooring in the computer lab, kindergarten room and connecting hallways; replace old fixtures and upgrade bathrooms on the south end of the elementary school, making them handicapped accessible; replace a section of corroded and leaky heating system pipes; and inspect the Red Gym roof.
The board also:
--Heard from Elementary Principal Paul Blanford, who said grades K-5 will have a new daily schedule. Reading and math will be taught in the morning, with the other subjects after that. Blanford explained testing showed more emphasis and time are needed to be spent on reading and math.
--Found out Elmwood received a Sportsmanship Award from the Dunn-St. Croix Conference for the 2009-10 school year. It's the second straight year Elmwood has received the award. The award is based on voting by referees, who grade fans, coaches and players.
--Approved the purchase of a new Blue Bird school bus, replacing one over 15-years-old and in need of repairs.
--Heard a Russian exchange student, Nelli Karimova, will attend Elmwood this year. She will be in the 12th grade.
