Events planned to commemorate Fair's 125th birthday
Chester Arthur was the U.S. President, "Buffalo Bill" Cody put on his first Wild West show, the "Ladies Home Journal" began publishing and there were only 38 states in the union.
Locally, another significant event occurred in 1883: the start of the Pierce County Fair. To commemorate the 125th edition this year, which will be held Aug. 7-10, a plethora of activities will be in store.
First off, for the next 28 weeks, the fair will be publishing "125 Fun Fair Facts" on the front page of the Life and Style section in the Herald. The first edition will run in this week's paper.
Fair Coordinator Ann Webb explained organizers had been trying to come up with activities for the 125th edition even before last year's fair. This idea originated as she was reading through old fair books, guides and was coming across facts listed in there she thought the public would find interesting.
"I was learning more and more about the fair as I dug deeper," she said.
