Famous state wrestlers on hand as Assembly passes Olympic wrestling resolution

MADISON - Some of Wisconsin's most famous wrestlers were on hand today, when the state Assembly voted unanimously to ask that the sport not be dropped from the Olympics.

Lawmakers approved a resolution calling on the International Olympic Committee to keep a sport that's been a part of the modern Games since 1896. In February, the IOC's executive board recommended dropping wrestling from the 2020 Games.

Andy Rein, who won an Olympic silver medal in 1984 and was later the wrestling coach at Wisconsin, supported the Assembly's move. So did Ben Peterson, a gold medalist from 1972 and a silver medalist in '76. Wisconsin Olympians Lee Kemp and Jim Haines were also present for the Assembly's show of support.
