Fatal traffic accidents throughout Minneapolis
(Minneapolis, MN) -- Police in Minneapolis are investigating a fatal collision between a dump truck and a bicyclist. It happened this morning near the University of Minnesota campus.
The female victim who was riding the bicycle has not been identified. Investigators are interviewing witnesses at the scene. Metro Transit detoured buses that run through the Dinkytown area.
A Hopkins woman has died from her injuries after being hit by a cab last Friday night. Thirty-eight-year-old Tonia Sorenson was with three others when she stepped off a curb in Uptown Minneapolis was struck by the taxi. Sorenson was a 1990 graduate of Redwood Falls High School. No charges have been filed yet.
The mother of a University of Minnesota student struck by a hit-and-run driver does not think her son will survive. Twenty-three-year-old Benjamin Van Handel from Appleton has been in critical condition since he was hit by a car early last Friday in Dinkytown. His mother posted a message on his CaringBridge website saying "It is with a very heavy heart that I need to share that Ben is restfully sleeping, enjoying his last night with us." Police are still searching for the driver who went the wrong direction down a one-way street and struck Van Handel and two female U of M students on the sidewalk. The suspect vehicle is described as an early 2000s white Toyota with possible front-end damage.
