Field set for WIAA girls' basketball tournament
Only one of last year's four champions has made it back to the girls' state high school basketball tournament.
Defending champ Milwaukee Vincent is among eight Division-One teams that will start squaring off Thursday in Madison. Division-Two titlist Grafton fell to New Berlin Eisenhower 62-54 in Saturday's sectional finals.
The other two defending champs, Amherst and Menasha Saint Mary's, were eliminated in the earlier rounds.
The state tournament begins Thursday with the Division-Four semi-finals. Wausau Newman plays Weston. And then Minong Northwood, the AP's top-rated school, will face South Wayne Black Hawk.
The Division-One quarter-finals will also be played Thursday. Milwaukee Vincent plays Racine J.I. Case. Verona takes on Milwaukee Pius XI. Top-rated De Pere plays Beaver Dam. And Wausau West faces Middleton.
Wasuau West eliminated River Falls in the sectional finals 58-42 Saturday.
The Division-Three semi-finals kick off Friday morning's play. Top-rated Cuba City plays Brillion, and Osseo-Fairchild faces Oostburg.
The Division-Two semis take place Friday afternoon. AP Number-one Monroe goes against Winneconne, and New Berlin Eisenhower plays Altoona. Title games in all four girls' divisions will be played on Saturday.
