Ellsworth High School's softball team used a six-run fifth inning, capped off by a two-run homer by Mariah Diercks, to beat Baldwin-Woodville at home Monday.

The Panthers trailed the Blackhawks 4-2 after B-W scored three runs in the top of the fifth. But in the bottom half of the inning EHS made contact with the ball many times, part of a 10-hit effort that led them to score six runs in the inning and take an 8-4 lead.

Halle Hatch, Mariah Diercks, Kenzie Diercks and Kayla Christopherson each had two hits for the Purple. Kenzie Diercks was the winning pitcher and Hatch got the save.

The loss all but knocked out B-W from the MBC conference title race. Ellsworth sits in second place, two games in back of Prescott. The Panthers play Tuesday at Amery and host New Richmond Thursday while the Cardinals are at Osceola Tuesday and then play two games next week.
