Filkins plays in Gophers season opening win over MTSU
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Prescott's Jake Filkins was able to get on the field for the University of Minnesota football team in the Golden Gophers' season opener vs. Middle Tennessee State Thursday.
Filkins, No. 48 for the Golden Gophers, tried out for the team as a long-snapper during preseason camp and made the squad as a walk-on. He is a sophomore eligibility-wise.
Jake's family and friends watched the game at Philander's Bar and Grill in Prescott Thursday.
The Gophers rallied for a 24-17 win over the Blue Raiders, although they led 14-0 for much of the first half. The Gophers had three punts on the night for a 39 yards average.
The Golden Gophers racked up 318 yards on the ground and had the ball for more than 45 minutes. Fullback John Hoese of Glencoe scored three touchdowns and Duane Bennett led the team in rushing with 30 carries for 187 yards. Coach Tim Brewster says they gave the game ball to Hoese who's father, Terry, is hospitalized in a coma after suffering a stroke. Quarterback Adam Weber finished ten-for-14 for 150 yards passing and no interceptions. Kicker Eric Ellestad was one-for-three in field goal attempts.
Filkins and the Gophers will be in action next Saturday when they host South Dakota at TCF Stadium. Kick-off is at 11:00 a.m.
